This collection of recipes and information about flavorings includes odd and delicious recipes, quotes from historical books about food ranging back to the 1600s, and memoir-like sections from the author's life from pre-World War II through the late 1960s, mostly in England but with some time in the Mediterranean. Her Lemon Snow (a kind of fresh cream cheese but lighter), Parmesan biscuits and Spiced Beef are staples in our household. I have also made Tomato and Pumpkin Chutney, Cumberland Sauce, and kedgeree. I have collected some of the books she references and my kitchen and library are the better for it. She creates a lively sense of colonial England, within England's border and in its former colonies.
